Brainstorm

Topic: What should we paint on this huge fence?

epicwall2

Thanks to everyone who made it along to Manky Chops on Tuesday evening for the first meet-up! It was great to hear everyones ideas! I’m putting them up here for people to comment on over the next few days and see what people are most interested in. Feel free to add more, especially if you couldn’t make it along or you have some more ideas that you want to share.

PS: Since it’s such a huge wall (1.8m x 80m x three sides) we should be able to do a number of different projects on it, over the next few months. However until the website is up and running next month I think it would be best to start with some projects that don’t require too much coordination. Anyway feel free to suggest more ideas and say which ones you are interested in working on. We’ll make a decision about the first project in a weeks time.

  1. Freestyle aerosol art

Non-structured, people can turn up and paint their own stuff with out needing too much organization.

  2. Massive queue of people

Everybody makes a bunch of different characters to create a big shopping line of people / robots / zombies / giant squids / and whatever.

  3. Make an ongoing story

A small section of the wall is painted every week or so building upon the previous section. Each week people could make suggestions for what should go next and then the most popular idea gets painted up.

  4. Highlight environmental issue

Invite people to create commentary or visual satire towards a social message or topic such as environmental issues.
(How might this tie in with the supermarket that is going to be built?) Is there anyway we might be able to design something that is specific to the location?

  5. Supermarket Utopia

Design the ‘ideal supermarket’ as a challenge for the future supermarket being build here to be environmentally friendly.

  6. Outdoor wallpaper

Do a whole bunch of stencil patterns that can be repeated over again like wallpaper. (Could have cryptic images that are only noticeable unclose)

    • Ian says:

This could be worked into one of the other idea’s eg some wallpaper behind the queue of people idea

  7. Cubical Stencils

Everybody is provided with a square panel on the wall which has been made to look like an bunch of identical office cubicles. Building on an identical set of stencils people can then do anything they want with their cubical. Flood it, full it with monkeys, whatever. (Could work with something other than office cubicles, such as a cut away of different interior spaces)

  8. Head, Body, Legs

Everyone makes different body parts and then we stencil up some mutant creatures.

    Stencil pool

People make stencils and share them. People then come up with different layouts using the stencils, we then chose the best layout, then Paint!

  10. Lots of Circles

Everyone comes up with a bunch of circle designs. People can do whatever they want so long as it fits inside of a circle. All the different circles are then painted up and it looks crazy.

with such a large canvas, i reckon whatever we do we should do so focused on a certain theme? or themes, as someone mentioned it could run for a few ’seasons’. so why not decide on a message we wanna spread via the wall first n let that dictate what we do on it?

    • Hi Brian, if there are a number of people who want to focus on a specific project (or theme) I defiantly want to encourage that. The idea with this first brainstorm is to let everyone choose what the focus for the initial project should be. (I’m hoping to get an initial project painted up in few weeks time on part of the wall). We will have to make a decision fairly soon about what the focus for this first project will be. However I want to leave it open for a couple of days so that for people are able to add some more suggestions and say which ideas they like the most. So, feel free to add more suggestions about what the focus of this first project should be and let us know which ideas you like the most.

    Outdoor Gallery

For one of the projects you could make it look like a massive gallery wall and have picture frames for people to put their designs up on.

damn, is it too late to suggest a theme?

escapism, anyone? with the current social/political/economic situation, people are inclined to indulge in fantasies to get away from reality (you’ve probably seen the recent big wednesday hype on news).

i reckon it’s important to remind ourselves the bad times wont go on forever but over indulging in fantasies will most definiately be harmful to any individual.

for me this is certainly an interesting theme to explore and one which the public can relate to and engage with

    • brian says:

Something from google which i was checking my spelling on escapism lol. quite biased and agressive, but it makes me think of songs such as ’somewhere over the rainbow’ (watched Australia anyone?)

    • Hi, Brian sound pretty interesting… Although I am writing up the brief for the first project at the moment (I’ll should have it sent out by tomorrow) I think you will like it. It is still fairly open ended so you can take this sort of angle you want with it. I will be running a number of other projects in the coming months too so if you have another ideas remember to jot them down for the next brain storm.

Definitely think this is the best idea, then it can be an ongoing thing, and when all the pieces are painted
you could start back over again (going round in a circle). This would mean each has a fair amount of time up,
and new ones get their own chance – also it keeps up with what’s topical. (You could have suggested
themes which could be social/environmental issues and people could vote for each one).
